Pirates Capture Second State Track Title in a Row
Story from the Flathead Courier
The Polson Pirate Track Team for the fifth time in its history — and second year in a row — captured the State Class B title at the 1965 Interscholastic Track Meet held annually at Missoula. This ties the 5-victory record that was held by Hamilton. The Pirates let in total points with 50 1/2. Runner-up was Missoula Loyola with 25.
Tim Stark’s 16-point performance gave him the highest point total for the Class B Division and the second highest total point score in the meet. He captured the 440 with a time of 50.3, 880 with 2:01.1 and the 120 high hurdles with 15.1. His 440 mark, although ruled out by a strong tail wind was two tenths of a second faster than the Class B record of 50.5 set by Lowney of Anaconda Central in 1959 and tied by Lodge of Red Lodge in 1963.
Other men helping Polson on its way to victory were Duncan Hubbard, Rick Strauss, Roy Lundeen, Randy Horner and Ray Holt. Hubbard gained first place in the 180 low hurdles with a time of 20.6. He also took second in the 100 and fourth in the 220.
Strauss captured first place in the 100 with a time of 10.3, supplementing this with a second in the 220 yard dash. In the javelin, Roy Lundeen took a second and a high jump third. The third was originally a tie with Wetzel of Cutbank but Lundeen lost the decision. Ray Holt got a fourth in the javelin. In the 880 relay the Polson team received a second.
