Pirates Capture Track Title

The Polson Pirates captured the Class B State Interscholastic Track and Field championship Saturday on Dornblaser Field at Missoula with a total of 22 1/3 points. The Pirate team defended the crown they won in 1955 as state champions. This was the third state title for the local track men as they also won in 1952.

The meet was a tight struggle in Class B all the way in the two day team championship events. Shelby placed second with 18 2/3 points and Valier was third with 16.

Gary Thomas led the Pirates by tying for first in the pole vault with Jore of Ronan aned Gibson of Shelby. All three cleared 12 feet in the event. Anderson took second in a fast 2:02.7 half mile, losing b y six inches. Kilmlan took two fourths, one in the discus and one in the shot. Kee was second in the shot and Schiltz and Lodmell wer third and fifth respectively in the broad jump. The Polson relay team of Burton, Lewis, Lodmell and Anderson were fourth in that event.

Burton qualified for the finals in the shot put, Lewis in the low hurdles and Lodmell in the 220 yard dash.
