Polson girls win 3rd straight A golf title

POLSON – Make it three in a row.

The Polson girls’ golf team completed its trifecta of State A golf championships by edging fellow Northwestern team Whitefish on Saturday for the Pirates’ third straight title.

Polson, which carded four girls in the top 10, finished with 715 strokes for the two-day tournament held at the Pirates’ home Polson Bay Golf Course. Whitefish, which trailed by 10 strokes after Friday’s first round, made up ground with the Bulldogs’ best single-day performance of the year, but couldn’t come all the way back.

Whitefish’s 355, a tournament low for all girls’ teams, left it six strokes behind.

The Pirates are the first three-peat champions since Billings Central won three in a row from 2008-10. Anaconda was third, nearly 100 strokes back at 814.

But it was a Bulldog ahead of all those top-scoring Pirates individually. Erin Tabish, who lost in a playoff last year on the third sudden-death hole, finished things off in regulation this time. She shot a 9-over-par 83 in the second round to finish at 165 and win by six strokes over Polson’s Jaylin Kenney (86-85-171) and Nicole Clairmont (83-92-175).

“That consistency paid off. She was so patient today, didn’t force anything,” Whitefish coach Tim Olson said. “We figured that was going to be the way to win the golf tournament with everybody pressing a little bit at state.”

The Bulldogs also had four individual medals in the top 15, but only Katie Fyall – sixth – could crack the top 10.

The Day 1 leader and defending champ Christal Tokash of Livingston had a disastrous second round. After shooting 80 Friday, she had 96 strokes Saturday to fall to fourth.
